Reality check for Pinella

Well, the Cubs made some moves this past weekend that must be starting to put a strong thirst in Lou Pinella's mouth. After much wheeling and dealing they have essentially the same team as last year. That puts it all on Pinella's shoulders. Herr Hendry resigned Wood and Ramirez for potentially more money than they were paid last year.

I must say i've never been a great Wood fan. I've always believed that he's lived these last 7 years off of that rookie 20 strike outing. I do like this deal though- pay for play has always appealed to me. With the 3mil buyout and 1.5 guarantee, its up to Woody to earn. If he does it, great- if not, see ya. I do think he can be a teriffic closer. He has the velocity and intimidation. Lets hope Rothchild has no involvement.

The Ramirez deal will be seen as part of Hendry's downfall. 73 mill is far too much Ramirez. He is an old 27 who is often injured. Average defensively with suspect batting skills at the start of every season. Most of his seasons are up and down with the average being decent. He got leadership money when he is a second or third man. He needs a true stud in front of him.

Why do we care how much the Trib spends? Because realistically they will only spend in the low 100's, so it is vital they spend it wisely. How do they go after Soriano or Zito with so much locked up and Zambrano getting his next year. Remember, the trib is on the block- either buyout or lbo. A buyout could help the cubs, a lbo could really tighten the strings. A heavey plate for big Lou to carry- better reach for something to wash it all down. Its going to be a long season!

I don't think Lou realises that it's the CHICAGO Cubs managing job that's been foisted upon him, not the IOWA Cubs job.
