Rant and Rave

Headbandgate continues to pick up steam. The racial component has now entered the drama. Remember Rodman- well the Bulls let him wear,do, and dress any way he wanted. Then came Eddie Robinson, Jalen Rose and Artest. They wore headbands in unconventional ways- around their necks and at angles. The bottom line being played up is that if you are "punk" like Rodman ie. white, its ok. If you are "ghetto" ie. black, then its a no, no. Lebron is now supporting Wallace. This is just getting interesting.

The Hawks hired a new coach- I can't remember his name, but i thought he already was the coach. More on this later.

What does it take to get lead attorney for T.O., Michael Irvin off of the air. He has at least 3 cocaine busts that I can recall and then there is his latest flap. Insinuating that Romo has black blood in him through his g.g.g. grandmother "grabbing a stud from the stable". And they canned Harold Reynolds. Though many of Irvin's peers equal his lack of insight, I can't understand why ESPN puts up with him. Send him back to Tom Arnold.

The Sox continue to deny trades they are not making. They have done next to nothing at the winter meetings. Primo(Williams) still seems very angry and Secundi(Oz) is amazingly quiet. The talk is that another playoffless season will be Secundis last. Chief apologist Hawk should also go, he is worse than a domer homer.

The Bears are in need of a bold move-no not Griese for Rex, not yet at least. Its time to let Ced the great get a chance to start. Jones is adequate, but given an equal number of carries Ced can explode! He hits the line hard everytime and is extremely quick for his size. Given 20+ carries, he will definitely break at least 2. He should be in the same position as Rex, but he can't shut up. He is the prized pick of both Angie and Lovie-like Rex, who has their undying Lovie. Ced would have the same except for his mouth, which he can't seem to stop. Jones is a journeyman back who works hard and had little competition. Given the quality line and number of carries Jones has, his numbers are expected. Remember how easily and publicly management turned on Jones when he didn't show for mini camp. Ced is the future, even if only he believes it.

The Cubs continue to talk of spending the lottery loot...and we can't wait!

NFL Power Rankings Week 12

There was plenty of reality based feedback for many playoff aspiring franchises. The game of the week starring the Bears and Pats lived up to billing and resulted in quite a bit of reshuffling. Bears Postgame

A sloppy nine turnover game results in the Bears picking up their second loss of the season. Lovie's answer, "We are a good football team. Our record is 9-2." I have to admit, I'm starting to tire of Lovie's attitude. I like my coaches to be angry after a victory, not making excuses after a loss. Even after Rex gave the game away, Lovie firmly stated in his post game interview that his 23.6 quarterback rating is untouchable and he is the quarterback. I'm not sure that Rex should be replaced, but why isn't his job performance based like everyone else's? He further states that they are 9-2, as if that solves everything. The 9-2 record, is frankly, not meaning as much these days. The point has be getting to a Super Bowl, not having a good regular season. I think Lovie is taking his eyes off the prize. Rex is definitely not a Championship caliber quarterback. If Lovie is happy with a first or second round playoff loss, he is wasting all the talent on the defense. In fact, the offense has a lot of talent now as well. Rex needs to be reined in. Put the Kyle Orton game plan back in. Understand your quarterback's weaknesses, adjust to them, or replace him. All the goodwill you built up with your good regular season record will evaporate instantly if you lose in the first round because you couldn't control your gunslinging quarterback.

Headbandgate

To headband or not to headband seems to be the most pressing question on Ben and the Bulls minds these days. Quick recap; Bulls beat Knicks, but Wallace gets yanked twice by Skiles for breakiing the Reinsdorfian rule of no headbands. Wallace enters game with red headband and Skiles soon pulls him. It took Pete Myers and two other assistant coaches into talking him into taking the headband off and Wallace soon reenters. Following halftime, Wallace again comes from locker room with headband. Skiles once again pulls him.

This is clearly a subtext of deeper issues with Wallace, Skiles and the Bulls. Well respected champion vet comes in and is not as easily manipulated as desperate rooks. If you thought the NBA was just about money, think again, its about garment control-more about this later. Wallace clearly doesn't buy into the Skiles system yet. He has been a champion, unlike Skiles, and can't be pushed around like the youngsters. This is clearly evident as Skiles has been careful not to directly criticize Wallace's play and behavior.

Following the game a 25 minute team meeting was held. According to Hinrich, they wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page-clearly they're not! We'll have to wait and see how this plays out, especially if they at this winning rate- 1 in every 6 games.

Reinsdorf used to have a rule against corn-rows, until it was clearly seen in a racial light, but the headband rule is even sillier. The bottom line may be to keep Wallace happy and he did seem to play better last night with the headband.

Stay tuned for breaking headband news here!

Bears Playbook Preview

This is definitely the Bears most difficult matchup of the season. If they are to pull off this upset-yes upset, they must execute from the following playbook.

1.)The Bears defense must contain the running game. Without this containment, it will be hopeless for the Bears-Brady will cut them up! The most effective way to pressure Brady is to shut down his running game, which the Bears are capable of.

2.)Pressure Brady without cheating on defense. Brady will pick apart the blitz with 8-12 yard passes. The Bears defense is very susceptible of short accurate passes by a confident QB as in the Arizona game. The Bears corners tend to play 5 yards off the receivers. Remember that Manning is out for the game.

3.)Attack the Pats 10th ranked running defense with the Jones running game combined with short Grossman passes. Try to make Grossman stay away from risky deep crossing patterns.

4.)Perhaps most importantly, the Bears cannot fall behind more that 10 pts early. When the Bears play catch up, Grossman is exposed.

It will take very good execution by the Bears and perhaps a few mistakes by Brady for a Bears victory.

The Bulls-Somethings Gotta Break

Perhaps its too early to start panicking, but six straight losses and eight straight on the road isn't what we were expecting this year. The playoffs were a given and the finals were no longer a dream. Tonight's loss against Philly raises several questions for Pax, Skiles and co.

Big Ben had 0 off/reb, 0 def/reb, 0pts and 1 assist in 20 minutes! This was the man that was going to take us to the promise land. His stats were tonight and have been rookie like! The 20 min stat is most telling because Skiles pulled him for sleeping on the job. Wallace clearly seems disinterested on the court this season. Whether Skiles benching him will motivate through embarrassing him has yet to be seen. Obviously $64 million doesn't motivate anymore.

Remember Wallace had a great supporting cast in Detroit-many large forwards and guards who could all score and rebound. Where does the Tim Floyd record and player/coach actions lead us. Well, unless they find themselves seriously about to fall out of playoff contention, things will be tumultuous but alright. This is the NBA afterall, the regural season is for strictly financial reasons.

If they are clearly not going to make the playoffs like the Hawks and Grizzlies, then I feel Skiles will be made to pay. Wallace and the players and their salaries are here to stay. Reinsdorf will remain faithful to Paxon-that's his style. Skiles remains the odd man out and history always repeats itself. The Scott Skiles burnout may be upon us.

premiering tomorrow night- Eddy's Revenge!

BCS Bits

Well another year of the Bowl Championship series is coming into focus. I know there is constant criticism of the BCS, but I gotta tell you, I love it. In no other sport is each and every game so important. Each and every game carries so much weight. I used to think that a BCS playoff would be better, but I no longer do. Remember, before the BCS we didn't have 1 and 2 play each other. Now we get a bonafide Championship Game. A playoff would totally destroy the history of the bowl games and remove some of what makes college football special.

Now on to the contenders. With Arkansas' loss today they are out. This realistically leaves only USC, Florida and Michigan as title contenders against Ohio State. Sorry Golden Domers, but your schedule this year was pathetic. Army, Navy, AirForce, UNC? Couldn't get the Boy Scouts to play you? Charlie 'I've got an ass on the front of my body as well as the back' Weiss really hasn't proven much to me yet. My prediction is they will lose to USC, which is having a down year, 44-21. Next year they should try having a stronger schedule. I really think USC will go to the title game, but if they lose and Florida wins out, the Gators should get a chance before a Michigan rematch. However it ends up, this will be another great year for college football, BCS and all.

More after Saturday's games...

NFL Odds and Ends

1.)NFL network makes its debut with a big thumbs up! Minimalist graphics on the screen make for more enjoyable watching. Though I'm not a big Bryant Gumble fan, he was refreshing to listen to after all the Madden rejects. He also is not an NFL homer like most of the ex-player announcer wannabees.

2.)Detroit crowd was constantly screeming "Fire Millen", but the powers that be decided that we don't need to hear that kind of negativity on Thanksgiving. The lack of accountability with Millen hasn't been seen since.....

3.)Go Romo go! And this guy is from football powerhouse Eastern Illinois. He's got a release like Joe Willie and field command that Grossman can only dream of. As we stated last week the Cowboys are starting to peak. Plenty of confidence building with all of their complementary offensive weapons and a defense that can contain.

4.)Pierson makes an interesting point today. That the Bears may find the rest of the season more compelling if they lose to the Pats. He argues that it will keep them interested in the remainder of the season and that the Bears need to play up the fact that the NFC is inferior. I disagree, the Bears lost to Miami because they have weaknesses, not because they looked past them. When game time comes, teams don't care whether they are NFC or AFC, they simply play to win.

5.)Monday night debacle! Kornheiser is BRUTAL! Zero chemistry between him and Thiesman. Desperation is evident by the fact that they bring in rappers to interview during the game. Oh, by the way, the games also suck!

6.)Sunday night football success. Madden and Michaels looked like genius's for the move. Flex schedule proving to be essential night football programming. The league can essentially never have a poor matchup.

7.)Pats 24/Bears 17. Bears defense will be exposed and Grossman better hope he doesn't have to play catch up to Brady.

Post bubble desperation

With no news of their own to harp about, Sox fans emerged from their post-bubble stupor with plenty of opinions about the northsiders. As my old friend Billy S. used to say "Doth does protest too much". With the Brain drain trust of Primo(Williams) and Secundi(Ozzie) standing pat with their broken arm pitchers and still claiming they got the best of the Thomas trade, they further deflected by slamming the Cubs.

How any team can complain about the Soriano deal can only be put on jealously. Who cares if they paid too much, its not our money and daddy won't stop spending. When badgered about potential moves, Primo gets edgy and tries to convince Southsiders that they are well positioned to repeat. The facts state otherwise; Detroit is hot and got hotter w/Shef, Minnesota is just starting to peak. The Sox are in the toughest division and desperately need offense and pitching.

Imagine Soriano on the southside, what an addition that would have been! They would have been right in the mix. But Primo never even considered it.

I'll give them credit for their 1 and done, it was the best thing to happen to the Cubs. What gets at Primo and Secundi the most is that they are second fiddle. Once and for all lets get it straight, the Sox can win 3 or 4 series in a row but the Cubs own this town! Its only now that the Cubs are acting like they want it.

Jim Hendry: Don't fail me now!

As an acknowledged Cubs fan, I am ecstatic about the new found spending spree at Clark and Addison. I for one, could care less about the payroll, care even less about the 6th and 7th year of Soriano's contract and firmly believe that the only way you ever overpay for anyone, is if that person's contract precludes you from picking up that next person you need to win. Otherwise spend away. You are losing fans to the Sox and the seats have been empty. The time is now!

Hendry has stated this is not going to be the case. At this point, we can only take him at his word. While the new Cubs lineup is indeed looking impressive, Jim, please don't stop! We need pitching, pitching and more pitching! And please, no more Wade "I'll be ready after my next surgery" Miller types. The only reliable part of the rotation right now is Zambrano. Prior is a total question mark. Wood is a setup or possible closer. The rookies can't be counted on for anything more that a fifth and possible fourth starter. So that leaves three, maybe two positions in the rotation. The current rumors have Gil Meche and Jason Schmidt. If you said Gil Meche who, you wouldn't be alone. Mr. Meche has a career 55-44 record with a whopping 4.65 ERA. Yes, that is right, a 4.65 ERA! Furthermore, he has never pitched 200 innings in a season. This kind of acquisition will do nothing more that waste the money the Cubs have spent on the hitting.

Jim, you have been bold so far. Picking up the hottest free agent on the market showed initiative and guts, don't go half way. Go after Zito or Glavine. Make a bold trade no one has thought of. Don't go half way with this Jim. If the stated goal is winning now, then Jim, do what must be done. Just don't fail me now.

The Cubs Bold Move

Its still hard to fathom that the Cubs just signed Alfonso Soriano. He is arguably the best player in baseball and certainly the class of this years free agent market. Most astoundingly the Cubs have just spent 1/4 of a BILLION dollars in one week! I'll be the first to admit I was wrong when I stated that the Ramirez signing would preclude them from pursuing Soriano because of budget constraints.

There are two major reasons that the Tribune has opened up the vault. The first must be the removal of Mcfail and his replacement by Mcdonough. Since very few know the exact process by which the budget is determined, addition by subtraction leads us to the Mcfail/Mcdonough scenario. Irregardless of where the praise lies, its one hell of a first move by Mcdonough.

The second and most imortant reason for the spending spree is the beginning of the unthinkable with respect to Cubs fans.
The Tribsters have finally started to alienate their blind fans with an embarrassing and pathetic product. A joke of such a team that the suits finally felt the snickering and ridicule in the boardroom.

It is the Cubs making the most un-Cubs like move that has shaken up the world. The switch has been flipped and all possibilities now seem attainable.

I think that a Schmitd signing is next in order to solidify the rotation. Coupled with a healthy Cotts, Woody as closer and an ass kicking manager, the Cubs can certainly contend. "Foolish thought" you say, well the Cards took the title with less talent.

In the meantime lets hope for a few more goodies from Mcdonough and Co. Suddenly " wait 'till next year" has become "Can't wait 'till next year"!

Ben: Where for art thou and other Bulls thoughts

I know its too early to panic about the Bulls, but following their Bears like victory in their opener against Miami they have looked dismal. Could we have been so excited about landing a premier center like Ben Wallace that we overlooked the numbers. They have been steadily declining since 02. His current figures are 6pts and 10rpg. Too soon to make a judgement you say, well these were his numbers last year as well. Is this what 64 mill buys you these days.

Much like the Rodman acquisition, Wallace is the perfect complement to an offensive force. Unfortunately for the Bulls, no offensive leader has emerged. Wallace's numbers look more like Tyson Chandler's then Rodman's. He will definitely have to step up offensively for this team to compete. I know he's here for his defensive prowess, but with opponents scoring more than 100pts he has appeared just average. This league is full of f/c who can put of 6/10 if given the chance for a fraction of the cost.

Another seed for thought is Scott Skiles history with teams he's coached. Years 1 and 2 go well while in year 3 the teams seem to stop buying his aggresive approach. Historically year 3 is when his teams begin to decline. True he has a young and impressionable team, but these are all professionals who now how other players are treated around the league.

Anything but a deep playoff team will be seen as a disappointment.

NFL Power Rankings: Week 10

Reality check for Pinella

Well, the Cubs made some moves this past weekend that must be starting to put a strong thirst in Lou Pinella's mouth. After much wheeling and dealing they have essentially the same team as last year. That puts it all on Pinella's shoulders. Herr Hendry resigned Wood and Ramirez for potentially more money than they were paid last year.

I must say i've never been a great Wood fan. I've always believed that he's lived these last 7 years off of that rookie 20 strike outing. I do like this deal though- pay for play has always appealed to me. With the 3mil buyout and 1.5 guarantee, its up to Woody to earn. If he does it, great- if not, see ya. I do think he can be a teriffic closer. He has the velocity and intimidation. Lets hope Rothchild has no involvement.

The Ramirez deal will be seen as part of Hendry's downfall. 73 mill is far too much Ramirez. He is an old 27 who is often injured. Average defensively with suspect batting skills at the start of every season. Most of his seasons are up and down with the average being decent. He got leadership money when he is a second or third man. He needs a true stud in front of him.

Why do we care how much the Trib spends? Because realistically they will only spend in the low 100's, so it is vital they spend it wisely. How do they go after Soriano or Zito with so much locked up and Zambrano getting his next year. Remember, the trib is on the block- either buyout or lbo. A buyout could help the cubs, a lbo could really tighten the strings. A heavey plate for big Lou to carry- better reach for something to wash it all down. Its going to be a long season!

Lessons learned in the Meadowlands

Well, as I stated in an earlier post, the Bears needed a convincing victory to assuage the fears of the fans and boost the confidence of the team. I think they definitely achieved that convincing victory. Even more important, were the things we learned about this team that had been in doubt. Let me ennumerate.

1. Rex Grossman proved that he is able to turn things around, not week to week, as in the past, but make corrections in the same game. This is a significant improvement.

2. The Bears offense was able to play well on the road, and come from behind to win. Another encouraging sign.

3. The Bears thoroughly beat a potential playoff team in the NFC.

All in all, some very encouraging signs that this team is the team to beat in the NFC.

Media Rant and Rave

The Tribs Fred Mitchell does quite a stroke job on Sammy in Sunday's edition. Fred flies down to the Dominican for one of Sosa's legendary B-day parties and lets the Sammy begin his Hall of Fame revisionist history. The money quote on how he hit so many homeruns w/out any steroids, "I went to bed everynight at 9pm and the wind was blowing out. " He also insists he was clean because he wasn't named with any other Orioles by Grimsly. No one is debating that he was juicing with the O's- his numbers sucked!

Dachicagosports blog called Sammy's Hall of Fame media tour before any of our peers. Our sources are unbeatable!

Curb Your Enthusiasm

The excessive exuberance of Bears fans this year has many reasons to be tempered. Before the humiliating fiasco against the Dolphins, the local press and fans had been whipped into a near hysteria. Everyone seemed to be confident in ordering tickets for Miami in October, building a wing in Canton for Rex and predicting an undefeated season. Somehow, this all happened while overlooking the easy schedule, dismisssing the near meltdown in Arizona and Minnesota and overrating a very raw Rex Grossman. Now, the Bears are on the cusp of being labeled the most overrated team of '06.

A convincing victory over the Giants is necessary for the Bears and their fans to regain some confidence that the '06 team is not a one-and-done playoff team and really is a legitimate Super Bowl contender. If Rex faulters and the defense allows Tiki Barber to run amok, the '06 Bears will be revealed as Super Frauds, not Super Bowl bound.

The Flinstones Warrior Strikes(Out) Again

Did you actually think that you heard the last from Samuel Peralta Sosa. The body by flinstones vitamins stated to the A.P. that he is ready to make a return- not comeback- but return to the big leagues next year. What's the most amazing about his statement is not his delusion to return, but that he is now fluent enough in English to be interviewed by the A.P.

Lest we forget how Sammygate led to one of this city's greatest and quickest downfalls in sports lore. Sammy's Nixonian paranoia and thin skin found its way to the Orioles in 05. He quickly claimed Baltimore as his city before a .224 average and 14 homeruns led to Peter Angelos telling the Warrior to fight elsewhere. 2006 found Sammy with only one non-guaranteed offer of 500k from the Nationals. Sammy was insulted enough to sit out the entire season.

Clearly Sammy is waging a p.r. battle for the hall of fame. He realizes that his charter membership in the hormone replacement therapy club now dashes his first class ticket to the hall. Sammy has always been very good at manipulating the media, until they finally turned on him. The plan has been to let the steroid furor die down by lying low in Santo Damingo and Miami. Then come back with any team for a borderline respectable salary and reach 600 home runs. In the process gain some goodwill back by turning on the Sammy charm while peppering the press with clever Sammyisms.

The only wrench in his plan is that his skills have deteriorated to class A level. I honestly believe he was only a less than average big leaguer without the juice. His career numbers placed graphically correspond almost exactly to the onset, peak, and decline of the steroid era. Even all the juice couldn't help him in the field.

Remember the magic of testosterone. It will make an average player fantastic and a fantantic player superman.(Bonds) It greatly incerases physical ability and recovery, but most importantly it gives the user the confidence to dominate. Perhaps thats why baseball stats went off the wall, more than any other sport, during the steroid era. Hitting a baseball takes confidence. When you have it in abundance, you fear no pitcher(bonds 03). When its lacking you can look as though you should go back to the softball leagues(Arod 06).

Unlike Conseco who has been blackballed by all with power. Sammy is still in the good graces of many managers. The fact that not one team will take a flyer on him is an astounding indictment of his diminished skills. Sammy the lovable latin who could do no wrong was adored by all. This must now be the hardest part for the great Warrior - nobody cares. Though his baseball skills have diminished, his newly acquired English skills have flourished. I hear Flinstones vitamins needs a pitchman. Hey Sammy, try it, it'll do wonders for your career.

T.O.-Fistfull of Dollars

Why do people continue to be outraged, astounded and appalled at T.O.'s behavior. His character pathology has been well established. From San Fran to Philly to the driveway and finally to Dallas he has not changed. He remains a psychoanalysis wet dream- a hyperverbal, self-indulgent, ego maniac who seeks the spotlight, can't stop talking and can afford daily sessions.

Fandom should be upset with Jerry Jones and co. They brought him to town knowing his instability and uncanny ability to fracture team chemistry. The T.O. show doesn't just appear on Sunday, but throughout the week. Lead attorney Michael Irvin has now brought in ex assistant D.A. Sterling Sharpe. Irvin defends his client every Monday on espn radio. The spin usually revolves around T.O. being the victim of being misunderstood and jealously.

The bottom line in the T.O. discussion should be his declining skills. Not only is he not in the top 5 receivers in the league, but he is not even the best receiver on his own team. Injured? Perhaps, but numbers will always tell the story with offensive studs and T.O.'s don't stand up.

How will the latest T.O. episode end? Exactly as it has at every other stop in the sitcom. Character pathology doesn't lie. The more things change-the more they remain the same.
